GATE 2026 Selection Process

The GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) exam is not a recruitment exam in itself but a qualifying test used by various institutes and organizations for admission or recruitment purposes. Here’s how the selection process works:

1. Appear for GATE ExamCandidates must register and appear for the GATE 2026 exam in their selected subject(s).
2. Score & Result DeclarationGATE result will be declared based on the final score out of 100 marks. A normalized score (GATE Score) is also calculated for multi-session papers.
3. Qualifying CutoffIIT Guwahati will release qualifying cutoffs for each paper and category. Only candidates meeting or exceeding the cutoff are eligible for further selection.
4. Admission to PG Programs (M.Tech/PhD)Candidates can apply to IITs, NITs, IIITs, and other institutes through COAP or CCMT portals using their GATE score.
5. PSU Recruitment (if applicable)Some PSUs (Public Sector Undertakings) may release separate recruitment notifications and shortlist candidates based on their GATE score.
6. Counseling/Interview (if applicable)Institutes or PSUs may conduct interviews, written tests, or counseling rounds for final selection.

Note:

  • GATE score is valid for 3 years for admissions.
  • For PSU jobs, GATE score is typically valid only for the current year (i.e., 2026).
  • Each institute or PSU has its own eligibility criteria and selection process, so candidates must check individual notifications.
